Best option for directory submission

Just wondered what everybody's opinions were on the following:

Should you only link to your home page with your primary keyword, link to your home page with most of your keywords, or try deep linking (where it is allowed)?

You'll find that most general directories unless you're doing a paid submission they don't like deep linking and will more times then not decline your submission.

Do your deep linking with articles and link swaps etc.
