Default Head getting bloody beating it against the wall

After too many attempts to count, I'm giving up trying to get the WP-Installer to work for me unless some white knight can save the day.

I know it's working for many of you, but for some reason it simple will not work for me. I get a persistent authentication error.

I've attempted to upload to 5 different sites in the same reseller account. I've quintupled checked the text strings, ftp settings, pw, un, etc. Even went so far as to change hosts, try again, fail, wiped out the domains on the new host and established the account to have clean installs.

The error persists!

I can ftp to the site via Smart FTP easily. Tech support says "I finally got logged in. I tried several times with the exact same details, I never changed them, I just kept click connect and it finaly connect on about the 5th try. If I'm having this many issues logging in and the installer is having issues logging in, then I can't see that the
installer is the problem. I would love to help you but I think you need to have your host look at your ftp setup to make sure it is working fine."

I reconfirmed the ftp setup with HostGator. Even tried IE instead of FireFox (grasping a straws!!)

It may be something simple, but it sure as the dickens eludes me. Is there something I'm overlooking here?

Default Possible answer

hi Steve

this is so simple I hate to suggest it, but don't be insulted because it had me tied up in knots!!

You're using Hostgator (HG), same as me.

When you go to the installer, what user name are you putting in? Because when I tried at first, I set up separate accounts, separate SQL, user name, etc, but what defeated me was I only had a HG ftp account for the "boss" account, I didn't think to set up a separate HG ftp account manually through the cpanel for each domain...

...and even after I'd the separate ftp accounts, I still came unglued because the installer wouldn't connect - I've no idea why not! - on my newly set up HG ftp separate accounts, but only when I put in the "boss" user name. That worked fab for the first 2 sites, and I began tearing my hair out when I couldn't get the right results for site 3!!

But then, suddenly it started working smooth as silk, and has done ever since, when i reverted to putting the user name (I used the same one in all 3 places) associated with each separate HG ftp account/cpanel account/domain account in the first installer user name box, and still using the SQL name, like it shows in the vid, for the second user name box.

If that's as clear as mud, you cld try Live Talk at HG, or phone them, they're gorgeous people and may even do it for you, they set up my very first ( non-WP) site for me, because I was so hopeless that they felt it wld be quicker!!!

Good luck with it, the installer really is fab once you get it working right :-)

all the best Anastasia

I hope this doesn't make the muddy water even muddier, but this is what I do, using hostgator, the baby account. I have my original, "boss" domain, www.bossdomain.com. I am now buying new domains. www.myseconddomain.com. In hostgator it has to be entered as an addon, but for seo and visitors it is of course a separate domain in its own right. I keep the same password for everything. For the new MySql databases, I keep the same administrator and the same password. So then in the PlrPro WP Installer, I enter "localhost", my original login info, then find the new folder, which is always one level down from public_html. It works fine every time.

The only thing I get, and this may be because I use FireFox, I get the "it does not look as if you have installed WordPress" message. That's easily dealt with. Click where it tells you, enter the first bit of info it asks for, click again, and somehow magically it is all done.

I have 2 glitches that come up all the time. I can only use the 2 column template, until I activate ALL the plugins, then I can use the 3 column one. And the other thing is that the Amazon plug in doesn't work. I am awaiting a reply from the guys about that.

Is there a particular reason some people like to use different administrators and logins for each domain, even though they are all used by the same individual on the same server? I do back everything up, so I did get hacked I could recover ok.

Later, when I am finally earning a bit of money, I will upgrade to a reseller account, and fork out for separate IP addresses, particularly for allied websites, so I can benefit from linking between them. Also much more secure I reckon. But that luxury will have to wait a few months!

Unhappy WP Installer = Total Frustration

Aaaarrrgggghhh

What a nightmare. I've spent (wasted) hours this weekend trying to get this bloody thing to work.

For my first site I used the PLR Pro free hosting, set everything up, and it worked like a charm. But then I came to set up my second site using an add-on domain. That's when the nightmare began....

Yes, I did all the right steps. I know that install video almost word for word

After numerous attempts I capitulated and signed up for a reseller account with HostGator. I'm not really ready to do this yet but I thought what the heck. If it works this way, then fine.

And it still didn't work.

I was getting the same message as you, slowcoach, in that WP was installed but no databases had been created. So I followed your tip (thanks for that ) after reading the message "it does not look as if you have installed WordPress" and magically the databases were created.

I don't care what anyone says, it appears to me that there must be a serious flaw in this software, otherwise why are so many people having so many problems with it?

Do Marc and Daniel ever check out this particular Forum? If they did then they would know there is more than one unhappy camper in here and maybe they might just see about looking into this problem!!

Default Blog Installer not working on GoDaddy, either

I anticipated using an external piece of software to install something on GoDaddy would be problematic but I also am lacking confidence in the basic tool because of FTP.

Here's my basic test. I can enter the address of my primary hosting account into the address bar of any browser using something like:

ftp://www.namethatdomain.com

GoDaddy then prompts for my FTP username and password (I only have one) and I am able to see the directory tree of my hosting account just fine. This also works with FTP Commander and FileZilla. When I enter this same information into the fields provided on the installer tool, the FTP connection fails.

If I can't get past this, I can't proceed with anything else.

I'm generally interested to see what plugins and widgets are enabled with the installed blog. I've installed more than several WordPress blogs on GoDaddy, upgraded versions, changed templates, modified widgets and added plenty of plugins. None of my blogs are making money yet and that is why I am here.

It isn't that I am lacking technical skills for problem solving when things come up. I do wish that somewhere in this material they would just disclose what plugins and settings need to be established in order to proceed. I know I could use the narrative information to get done in a few hours what sounds like it might take days to do using their tool.

Before anyone chimes in, I have no interest in switching to another hosting service. GoDaddy isn't perfect but I understand it now and, for me, it is much easier to have all my domains in one place.

Does anyone know or are any of you out there willing to provide this information so I can bypass using the installer tool and get my first blog up?

Thanks.

I am sorry to hear from you guys that there are so many problems with the installer.

I do encounter similar problems with my add-on domain when setting up my second blog and can emphatize with your anger and frustration. The same errors 404 message or
"it does not look as if you have installed WordPress" happened to me as i set-up my blog.

But wait, before you jump into any conclusion, believe me, there is nothing wrong with the installer. In fact, the problems may be attributed to our unfamiliarity with the set-up and I wouldn't blame Marc or Daniel for that.

What I did was I delete/erase everything, the database name in MySQL and the folder for the database name I created in the cpanel and redo everthing over and over again until I realised where the error came from.

In my case for example, I installed under the wrong directory which is the parent directory or what you called your primary domain.

Under the installer, when I set-up my directory in the public_html, I didn't type in my add-on domain name first then follow by the actual database name/blog name.

For clearer picture, the sequence should be :

public_html > add-on domain >database/blog name.

That's how the sequence should follow.

Once, I got it, I test it over and over again and so far there are no problems for me now. I cannot say whether your problems are similar or not with mine, but there is no harm trying if you really want to be the "installer friends"

So my next challenge now will be on how to customize my blog. Well, I will keep you all posted.

Thanks for sharing.

Cheers

Thanks for the tips everyone. I'll give them a go!

Then I can quit beating my head against the installer wall and get rid of this headache it's given me!
